Summary/Abstract: Alban Butler (1710–1773), an English Roman Catholic priest and hagiographer, authored the influential The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Other Principal Saints in four volumes (1756–59). His goal was to provide concise, readable, and trustworthy accounts of the lives of saints. The work was highly successful, leading to numerous reissues (including updated editions) and translations. Butler’s portrayal of Cyril and Methodius became a foundational reference in Western European encyclopaedic and popular literature on the saints. However, scholarly research has largely overlooked Butler’s impact on the field.
