The Development of Theological Terminology in the Old Bullgarian Language. A Subsystem of the Special Denominations in the Sphere of Liturgics (Based on Material from the Oldest Written Records of the 10th and 11th Centuries)

Summary/Abstract: The present research is part of a series of our publications on the special theological vocabulary (analyzed in separate terminological subsystems) attested in the so-called classic Old Bulgarian records. The focus here is on the special denominations of basic concepts of Christian worship which are featured prominently in the first translations of the Holy Scriptures, as well as other hymnological, exegetical and hagiographical texts, created by St Cyril, St Methodius and their disciples at the beginning of their mission among the Slavs for liturgical use and spiritual benefit. This investigation differs from the extant examinations of liturgical terms in that it is not bound up with specific textological problems. The respective lexico-semantic group is considered in a broader linguistic perspective and in the light of historical terminology, with particular attention paid to the term-formation, terminological nomination (a special case of lexical nomination), systematicity and variation of terminology. The results of the study reveal the presence of a well-developed liturgical terminology in the 10th – 11th centuries, which can easily be explained by the significance of worship in the lives of medieval people. The collation with our contemporary liturgical terminology proves the exceptional stability and vitality of the tradition of St Cyril and St Methodius regarding the special liturgical vocabulary in the history of the Bulgarian language.
