Summary/Abstract: The last native red deer (Cervus elaphus L.) present in Bosnia and Herzegovina was killed in the early 19th century. There are no valid written records about the distribution of its populations at the time of the disappearance. The first relevant sources are dating from the time of Austro-Hungarian occupation and later period. With the help of the toponomastical analysis, reconstruction of its former native range was done. Additional informations are collected on the basis of spatial distribution of stećci, specific medieval tombstones, which carry motif of deer and hind. The analysis of the relevant documentation identified the main reasons that led to the disappearance of the species from these areas. The obtained results can serve as one of the footholds for the selection of initial habitats during the eventual reintroduction of red deer in the area of B&H.
