Summary/Abstract: Sunday adult education schools first appeared in the second half of the 18th century with the General School Decree, which mentioned Sunday adult lessons for apprentices. With this, education in Slovenia was for the first time directed also at adult education and these Sunday adult education schools were the first known schools aimed at adults in Slovenia. The article talks about research into the first adult education institutions in Slovenia, more specifically the Sunday adult education schools between 1774 and 1870. First it describes the reasons that lead to the appearance of these schools and then the types of such schools, the content taught, and their importance for the Slovene nation and particularly for the Slovene language. At the end there is a description of an example of the teaching at a Sunday adult education school in Črnomelj.
