Summary/Abstract: In the wake of the tragic mass shooting at Charles University's Faculty of Arts in December 2023, the debate on school safety measures has intensified in the Czech Republic. Václav Walach and Petr Kupka argue that while technical security measures are necessary, they are insufficient on their own. Drawing on international experiences, particularly from the United States, they highlight the limitations and potential negative consequences of situational prevention strategies, such as increased surveillance and security drills. Instead, they advocate for a more holistic approach that includes social prevention measures aimed at strengthening interpersonal relationships and providing psychological support. The authors emphasize the importance of learning from past mistakes and adopting a balanced approach that combines both technical and social strategies to enhance safety in educational institutions. They also call for stable and sufficient funding to support long-term preventive measures and stress the need for a broader societal effort to address the root causes of violence.
