Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the form of the so-called inmates’ code in the current conditions of the prison system in Czechia. This study aims to investigate how convicts construct a set of guidelines on how to behave in prison. To do this, long-term field research was conducted in a male medium and high security prison. The data consist of interviews with 18 convicted men. The data were analyzed using the cluster method combined with the contrast method. The results present an original scheme of social knowledge regarding recommended behavior during imprisonment, and this behavior takes the form of dilemmas that a convict has to solve during his stay in the prison environment. The results are discussed.
