Summary/Abstract: The 19th century was a period of transformation and change for Great Britain under the rule of Queen Victoria (1819-1901), who reigned from 1837 until 1901. The time referred to as the „Victorian Age”, was dynamically filled with economic, political, social, and cultural changes. An unfortunate event in 1861 caused the state of national mourning to be felt, and its effects were profound on the fashion and aesthetics of the time. The color black was then enshrined as a symbol of mourning, predominant in formal attire. Mourning jewelry became a symbol of respect and remembrance of the deceased and were usually made from gold, silver, or other materials. These ornamented pieces often contained precious stones or hair, reflecting the grief of the mourners. Victorian Romanticism, which took influence from the European Romantic Movement, favored idealization of bygone times and social realities.
