Summary/Abstract: Women’s handiwork lessons are part of the development of schooling for women. The article presents the development, content and educational importance of women’s handiwork in primary schooling in Slovenia after the third primary school law (1869) and until the years immediately following World War Two. It describes the subject curricula, the role of female teachers in the preservation of “national images”, the importance of women’s handiwork exhibitions and of the acquired skills in everyday life. Handiwork lessons at the Slovenian School Museum have been offered since 2011 within the pedagogical programme of Our Grandmothers’ and Grandfathers’ Lessons, and after 2013 also an embroidery workshop. The lesson called Let’s sew a button! is set in 1926 and is very well received by participants.
