Difficulties and Challenges in the Translation of Civil Contracts from Portuguese into Romanian

Summary/Abstract: The present study examines the relationship between law and language, as well as the strategies that are used by translators when dealing with legal documents, especially civil contracts. It highlights the importance of dynamic equivalence and of skopos theory in the legal translation process. The study includes an analysis based on a corpus of civil contracts (sale-purchase, employment and lease agreements) that were translated from Portuguese into Romanian, pointing out the various challenges and difficulties encountered by translators and the solutions they found.
