Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the strategies used in the Romanian version of the novel Chiquinho by Baltasar Lopes, translated by Mioara Caragea in 1981, in order to overcome the gap between Cape Verdean and Romanian culture. To that aim, the concept of cultureme is used here as defined by Lucía Molina (2006), along with the categorization of cultural concepts and the classification of translation techniques devised by the same author. The techniques employed in the translation of culturemes pertaining to Molina’s category of cultural patrimony are analyzed, revealing a preference for adaptation as part of a strategy aiming to bring the source text closer to its target language audience by replacing unfamiliar cultural elements with others typical of Romanian rural life. Although exoticizing elements are still present, the translator generally favors a naturalizing approach, sometimes to the detriment of rigorously preserving source text meanings.
