Summary/Abstract: Motivation has a significant impact on our behavior, it initiates, encourages, and gives direction in achieving a goal. Our research is focused on finding answers on how to motivate students to learn, how to develop interests in new areas of science, on what motives to base teaching and learning, etc. There are different motives that initiate learning and which are different at different levels of schooling. In this paper, the emphasis is on examining the representation of external and internal motivation in the learning process in primary school students. The research was performed in March 2021 on a sample of 140 students from the Primary school “Bora Stanković” in Belgrade, aged from fifth to eighth grade. Our research shows (as well as many before) that the assessment grade/mark is still the strongest motive, which gives a clear picture and indicates the need to strengthen internal motivation, which sets a significant task for teachers, parents, but also for the so-called reforms in the education system.
