Summary/Abstract: The plants are part of nature but also they have cultural and symbolic significance in Macedonian tradition. This paper highlights how plants are not just elements of nature but are deeply tied to human customs and beliefs, often associated with rituals and possessing perceived magical properties. Their use and symbolism, rooted in ancient traditions, continue to convey wisdom and cultural value. The role of magical powers attributed to certain plant species should be stressed. Taboo often played an important role in the act of naming plants. Therefore, there is the problem of taboo, concerning particularly toxic and medicinal plants. Names resulting from taboo have a specific structure: they do not refer directly to a particular species because a magical plant is not called by its actual name. The semantic motivation of phytonyms is the basis of the nomination mechanism. To decipher it properly, one needs a thorough botanical, cultural, historical and linguistic knowledge. Without it, an in-depth study of the origin of plant names is difficult, if not impossible. The etymology of plant names, especially medicinal ones, reveals their origins and profound importance. Through naming, people express respect and belief in the magical and protective qualities of plants.
