Summary/Abstract: The article contains information on green areas in urban locations. The main objective of the work was to review and verify the methodology used to interpret the results, and determine the importance and scope of greenery protection in urban areas as described in the academic literature or in statutory laws. The verification was based on a review of a wide range of sources (including resolutions or guidelines of international organizations) relating to urban greenery. Selected concepts of green planning in cities of various sizes, with different dominant functions or natural conditions are presented. The article also contains information on methods of green inventories in urban areas based on more or less precise guidelines, both descriptive and numerical, as well as obtained through the interpretation of remote sensing data. As a result, the diversity and inconsistency of the definitions used and the multiplicity of approaches to the analysis of the degree of greening in cities were demonstrated, which in effect has led to the unreliable spatial analyses used to assess the quality of life of residents and to plan the spatial development of a given unit.
