Summary/Abstract: This article provides an overview of the development activities at IHI Ionbond for the deposition of tetragonal amorphous carbon coatings. ta-C coatings belong to the class of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings. Their special properties include the high sp3 bonding content and the absence of hydrogen in the coating. This results in high coating hardness and significantly higher temperature resistance compared to hydrogen-containing carbon coatings.
