Summary/Abstract: This article is an attempt to examine and synthetically discuss the role that the landowner’s manor and landed gentry played in shaping and strengthening Polish identity and culture in the territory under Russian partition between 1864 and 1914. The article does not address the strictly political initiatives of the gentry but instead presents an overview of the pro-Polish cultural, social, and economic activities of the landed gentry from the Kingdom of Poland and the annexed lands. It also attempts to answer the fundamental question of to what extent the activities of the Polish gentry influenced the halt or limitation of Russification processes in Polish lands from the fall of the January Uprising to the outbreak of World War I.
