Summary/Abstract: The paper present Yakut lexemes related to pasture and animal housing in comparison to their equivalents in Mongolic and Tungusic languages. The results suggest that the word мэччирэҥ was borrowed from a Mongolic language. The Yakut word отар may be both a reflex of the common Turkic *otar ‘pasture’ with a Yakut synharmonism and a reverse Mongolic borrowing. The Yakut stems алаас, өртүк, оттук, сыһыы, хонуу are of Turkic origin. The subject group “Buildings and structures for animal housing” include five stems: хотон, титиик, дал, хаһаа, күрүө, with four of them being borrowed from Mongolic languages. The Yakut word хотон ‘animal stall for winter housing’ goes back to the Proto-Mongolic *kotan ‘barrier, fortress’. The stem дал ‘pen (enclosure)’has both Mongolic and Tungusic parallels. The Yakut хаһаа ‘stable for adult and young horses’ also has Mongolic parallels. The word күрүө ‘hurdle, fence, hurdle, structure’ is also an obvious Mongolic borrowing. The Yakut word титиик ‘summer housing for livestock’ originates from the Turkic verbal stem tüt- ‘fume, smoke’ since a smoky fire is arranges near a титиик to drive away mosquitoes and gnat. The study suggests that the word күкүр ‘a structure used to feed hay in a stall’ if of Mongolic origin while its synonym долборук is of Tungusic origin. The analysis showed that the Yakut vocabulary of housing animals on pasture lands is mainly of Turkic origin whereas most words related to housing animals in stalls are of Mongolic origin.
