Summary/Abstract: Self-concept, self perception, self awareness, self image, ego identity, self are terms which depending on the theoretical approach denote subjective experience of own personality. Self- concept is a significant factor in the psychological and social functioning of children and youth, especially in the form of influencing the direction of behavior. Perhaps the most sensitive period of life to form sufficiently clear and stable self-concept is the period of adolescence. This period is extremely turbulent in terms of psychosocial adaptation and physiological- morphological development, it is crucial for adequate perception, maintenance and expression of self-image. Closely related to the self concept is self-esteem. It plays a major role in understanding oneself and is sensitive to internal and external influences during adolescence. In order for adolescence to become responsible and mature members of the social community which they belong , they need to be aware of their own qualities, be aware of the social support they receive (and which they will provide to others) and form consistent high enough self-esteem which will help them to shape and maintain an optimal image/self concept.
