Summary/Abstract: The text is an attempt to present the main issues of 11th Venice Architecture Biennale entitled ‘Out There: Architecture beyond building’, directed by Aaron Betsky. The main exhibition in the Arsenal, the presentation in the Italia pavilion and expositions in some chosen national pavilions in the area of the Giardini are being analysed. Amidst the most important plots of this year biennale the following matters should be mentioned: a question of architecture status and borders (Betsky postulated to differ ‘architecture’ from ‘building’ in the manifesto accompanying the exhibition), relations between architecture and politics, as well as considerations on ways of displaying architecture. Reflections on future of architecture occurred to be an often mentioned issue. It was comprehended both in the wide context of the discipline development, targets and challenges and in a narrower aspect of fortunes of some given examples of buildings. The latter was shown in the winning exposition in the Polish pavilion (Hotel Polonia. Life After Life of Buildings). It seems that the most interesting attempts to interpret this year subject come from the authors of the national presentations and of the experimental architecture exposition in the Italia pavilion, whereas the main exhibition in the Arsenal was disappointing in the majority of the commentators’ opinion.
