Summary/Abstract: What are the foundational, key factors for successful group therapy? In this article, I examine the three main factors for positive interaction between self and other in self-help groups. Universality, altruism and belonging within interpersonal relationships create favourable conditions for enabling other deep, transformative and therapeutic processes. Most people who seek professional help for their mental health have difficulties in two main areas: 1) maintaining a sense of personal worth (self-esteem) and 2) creating and maintaining meaningful and satisfying relationships.
