Summary/Abstract: How potent are the aesthetic concepts of Romanticism, and what validity do they have beyond the epoch of Romanticism in literary attempts to decipher the world? Starting from this question, the transcendental poetry of Romanticism and the principle of early Romantic irony are at the center of this essay. However, their significance extends beyond the Romantic epoch, as shown by precursors such as CERVANTES and postmodern authors whose poetological ideas are closely related to early romantic irony as defined by FRIEDRICH SCHLEGEL. On this basis, this thesis explores how the self-reflexive moments are a discussion of the conditions of the possibility of art and are the reason for the enduring fascination with Romanticism. A possible explanation for the constant return to and renewal of romantic aesthetics over the course of literary history lies in Romanticism’s constant attempt to grasp the relationship between human existence and the world. In this respect the Romantic aesthetic conveys a sense of creation as well as of the human psyche.
