Summary/Abstract: The extremely important task of educational institutions and instructors is to be able to motivate their students, thereby reducing school dropouts before graduation, increasing the performance, persistence, and creativity of the institution and the students. The aim of our research was to examine the issue of motivation among first-year students of the Partium Christian University, Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. Self-Determination Theory (SDT) serves as a basis for examining this. SDT is a method used to study human motivation and personality. We examined four hypotheses, of which the first two were not fulfilled, the third was, and the fourth was only partially confirmed. During the evaluation of the questionnaires, we performed Pearson's correlation and correspondence analysis. In the course of our research, we found that the most popular of the internal motivation issues for knowledge acquisition among PKE students was the review of topics attractive to the students, as well as the discovery of new things. The most relevant factor between internal motivation and the factor related to achievement is the feeling of success and the provision of good performance. Regarding external motivations, parental support is listed first, and teachers' openness, explanatory skills and ability, as well as the individual's future vision are the other main factors.
