Summary/Abstract: Today, one of the most popular science fiction books and series is G.R.R. Martin’s ‘A Game of Thrones’. This author creates a fictitious world modeled on medieval England. In this world literacy is unfamiliar to most of the population. Only the elite of Westeros is familiar with the topic of literacy. In this paper I aim to investigate traces of oral tradition in Martin’s books. He was probably unaware of the theories of primary oral tradition, but we can find traces of orality in the folklore of Westeros. The presentation of Westeros in Martin‘s books is based on his knowledge of the Middle Ages.
