Summary/Abstract: • The aim of this study is to present the launch of the social science journal 5étünk and its first twenty years of editorial policy. I used document analysis for my research methodology, and of course I relied on my memories and my own experiences. From the very beginning (1971), the journal 5étünk was a nest for social scientists and intellectuals publishing in Hungarian. At the start, the editor-in-chief defined its goal as the growth of the debate workshop of Vojvodina scientists publishing in their native language. In the beginning, – either to ensure its survival, or because the editor-in-chief saw this as important for the development of the journal – the articles emphasized following state policy, publishing current Marxist ideology and party documents. For this reason, we rightly missed constructive polemics and the chance for debate in 5étünk. In its second decade, the magazine still adapted to the current party-political expectations (congress topics, Tito, etc.), but it was increasingly freed from daily politics. Thematic issues brought new value, and an opening towards real social phenomena, arts, ethnography, demography and, last but not less importantly, foreign works appeared. I would like to highlight some valuable thematic issues, which were directed towards new worldviews and opened up as a window for scientists and other intellectuals: collective national community rights, right to language use, minority autonomy; social aspects of the women’s issue, village and peasant society, the work of the painter Marcel Duchamp, the philosophical views of György Lukács and Jürgen Habermas, and finally civil organization and the division of a changing society. The new thematic initiatives expanded the minority boundaries of the Hungarians of Vojvodina, bringing freshness not only to the scientist, but also to other readers. The journal was printed in a thousand copies and was published at least six times a year, sometimes in double issues. The creativity and orientation of the young scientists in the world were thus broadened.
