Summary/Abstract: In the former laborer, who once stirred from the socialist stands and was known by all the workers of Brăila’s outskirts — Brăilița, Comorofca, and Dorobanți — lies a treasure of moral qualities that neither the wretched environment, nor the hostile and unfavorable circumstances, nor the physical and emotional hardships that shook him so deeply could squander. The quintessence of “man,” in the highest sense of the word, was embodied in this humble “son of this land.” And it is solely to this treasure of moral qualities that we owe the fact that Panait Istrati managed to escape the mire of decay and mediocrity, and to emerge into the bright light of a healthy life — clean, with lifted spirits, and with his genius erupting.
