Summary/Abstract: At first sight, freedom seems to be the opposite of causality. It is considered to mean the capacity of the human being to act without having been determined beforehand by any other cause than his own will. Throughout history, and especially in recent times, such an understanding of freedom has often been rejected: if in the past the reasons were mainly metaphysical, nowadays the reasons seem to be backed by scientific research. The following article argues that the problem of freedom cannot be approached by science because it is a metaphysical topic. As such, freedom is necessarily related not primarily to causality but to a general understanding of the world. However, this understanding is the result of the fundamental creativity of man, which means that everything we state about the world has only temporary and not immutable value. As a consequence, creativity itself cannot be thought of as being determined by any previous factor, and therefore, this is also the fundamental argument for the inalienable freedom of the human being.
