ANALIZA SUDJELOVANJA DJECE S OŠTEĆENJEM SLUHA U ORGANIZIRANIM SPORTSKIM AKTIVNOSTIMA
AN ANALYSIS OF PARTICIPATION IN ORGANIZED SPORT ACTIVITIES IN HEARING IMPAIRED CHILDREN

Summary/Abstract: Principal objective of this study was to determine to what extent children with hearing impairment participate in organized sport activities (training under expert guidance with membership in a sports club or program for 60 minutes per week). The research sample included 272 students from two elementary schools and 60 children with hearing impairment (the Polyclinic Suvag in Zagreb) of 7-11 years old. For the purpose of the research a form about children’s participation in sports was used. It was designed to examine motor performance in deaf elementary school children and its association with sports participation (conducted by Hartman, Houwen, and Visscher, 2011). The research hypothesis assumes the existence of statistically significant differences between normal-hearing children and children with hearing impairments in participation in sports. Thereby it is expected that children with hearing impairment, compared to normal-hearing children, will be significantly less involved in sports. The main findings with confirmation of significance with the χ2 test in this study show that only 40 % of children with hearing impairment participate in sports, and taking into consideration only preschool children results show data of 20 %. The contribution of this research is noticeable in new knowledge on difference in participation in sports of normal-hearing children and hearing impaired children in the Republic of Croatia.
