Summary/Abstract: According to JULI ZEH, German society has bid farewell to systems of identification that unite it as a collective. Her thriller novel Unterleuten (2016), in which the homonymous village fails to live together in conviviality raises crucial questions about the collective ethics for the future. The article explores the question of how this novel, even with this starting point of convivialist failure, confronts the reader with principles of ethics for the future as a wishful projection of spaces of coexistence for future generations.
