‘You’ll End Up in a Black Bag’: An Analysis of Gen- der-Based Violence in Urban Spaces Based on Research with Young Women in Argentina

Summary/Abstract: The article examines gender-based violence experiences in public spaces, based on qualitative research conducted with young women in Argentina between 2017 and 2022. It aims to understand the discourse of fear towards the ‘city’ that accompanies girls from an early age, and their initial experiences of violence and harassment in public spaces. The article employs a gender perspective on the phenomenon of fear of violence and feminist urban theory, which conceptualizes public space as a male domain and private space as a female domain. It analyzes the consequences of this binary division, including the amplification of fear among girls and blaming of them for the violence they experience. Theresearch, covering the period of mobilization of women’s rights movements in Argentina, reveals how narratives about femicide appear in the biographies of young women and how urban violence is a complex phenomenon related to both individual experiences and public discourse.
