Summary/Abstract: The history of the socialist movement has been one of the most ideologically manipulated subjects in Romanian historiography during the communist regime. Benefiting from access to important archival sources, which before 1989 had been discretionarily administered by party authorities, this article re-examines the activity of the Romanian Social Democratic Party during the two years of neutrality (1914-1916). The contribution explores the positions adopted by Romanian socialists towards the war, the main policies they extolled at the time, and, above all, their impact on Romania’s politics and society.
