Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to explore the phenomenon of death from the perspective of pre-judicative hermeneutics. In the first part of the paper it is laid out D.D. Roșca’s tragic conception on human existence and Mihai Ralea’s definition of man as an “absurd animal”, arguing that despite the fact that culture (in its broad sense) seems to be useless from a biological point of view, regarded from an existential perspective it is what provides man with the opportunity of fulfilling his nature and thus becoming that which we truly is – human. The tragic is equally constructive, for it determines action, and destructive, when reflecting upon its own condition the human consciousness is exposed to the danger of nonsense. The experience of attempting to think about (one’s own) death is an example of the latter. However, any lack of meaning is only temporary since meaning-making process is an immanent feature of the human mind. In the final part of the paper, we describe the above-mentioned experience using two concepts from pre-judicative hermeneutics: the constitutive and the de-constitutive function.
