THE RESTORATION OF THE STONE BRIDGE IN SKOPJE FROM 1671 AND 1677 (ANALYSIS OF A DOCUMENT FROM THE OTTOMAN DIVAN)

Summary/Abstract: The analysis of this document revealed several previously unknown aspects regarding the history of the Stone Bridge in Skopje. In addition to supplementing the thesis that in the Ottoman administrative records it is named as the bridge of Sultan Mehmed Fatih, we also concluded that the bridge was renovated several times during the 17th century. We also realized that, contrary to the previous opinion that the northern part of the bridge was destroyed during the Austrian occupation of Skopje, after which a wooden structure was erected, the destruction and erection of the wooden structure occurred earlier.
