Summary/Abstract: Four years after the end of the First World War, Bitola, a city still bearing the scars of past conflicts, faced yet another tragedy. On 18th April 1922, the third day of Easter, a fire broke out in a warehouse storing military loot of the Serbian army, leading to a catastrophic explosion. The Serbian military authorities were held responsible for the tragedy, as their negligence was deemed the cause of the explosion. This article provides the first comprehensive analysis of the cause and consequences of the great explosion in Bitola, utilizing notes from the newspaper Politika and the report from the Committee for Determining the Causes, which was established immediately following the explosion. The investigation uncovered numerous shortcomings. The explosion resulted in significant material damage to the city and caused dozens of human casualties.
