Summary/Abstract: Digital competences play a key role in today’s society, offering the skills necessaryfor effective use of digital technologies. They range from technical aspects, such as the useof computers, mobile devices and software, to critical skills, such as assessing the reliabilityof information or problem solving. This article outlines the importance of Computer AidedDesign (CAD) software as an essential tool in the educational process, with a particular focuson its impact on the development of digital competences and the promotion of sustainabledevelopment goals. CAD software, by enabling simulation and digital design, reduces costsand resource consumption, which fits in with global efforts to reduce negative environmentalimpacts. The aim of this article is to highlight the role of available educational tools that can beused at different levels of education to build the technical and innovative competences neededin the digital age. The most popular free tool at the moment, FreCad , will be used as an example.The article is an introduction to a deeper analysis and discussion in the broader context of resto-ring the ethos of the technical professions and increasing the recognition of the importance ofcomputer-assisted technical education.
