Summary/Abstract: Until 1860, the writing of the Romanian language used the Cyrillic alphabet. Along with Latin and Ancient Greek, which were the main cultural languages of medieval Europe, another written language appeared in the second half of the 9th century, called Old Slavonic or Paleo-Slavic.Until the beginning of the 16th century, the Romanian Slavonic language was used exclusively in writing, together with medieval Latin, after which the first Romanian texts, original and translated, appeared, and Slavonic gradually lost its importanceAt the end of the 18th century, the Cyrillic alphabet was replaced by the Latin alphabet. In 1860, one year after the Union of the Romanian Principalities, the new writing was officially and definitively adopted. Long before the switch to the Latin alphabet, Latin letters were mixed with Cyrillic letters, and complete texts with Latin characters were to appear.
