Summary/Abstract: The Scandinavian conquests were no doubt very pervasive but linguistically not very invasive and only lately so. This is in marked contrast with the Norman Conquest (1066), which was socially and culturally utterly invasive, yet on the whole not very pervasive: the Norman French have left an indelible footprint, more than any other ‘‘alien” factor, except Latin perhaps. After all it is a matter of social and political supremacy or the lack of it.
