Summary/Abstract: Romanian plug „plough‟ has a very solid position within the main stock of the Romanian vocabulary, the word under discussion being attested in all four dialectal branches of Romanian (Daco-Romanian, Macedo-Romanian, Megleno-Romanian and Istro-Romanian). Also, the phonetic shape of the respective word shows no trace of passage through Slavic. Therefore, in keeping with suggestions coming from several predecessors, the present author considers that, rather than being regarded as an Old Germanic term that reached Romanian via Slavic (as indicated by mainstream etymological dictionaries), Romanian plug should be taken into consideration as a result of direct contact between ancestors of today‟s Romanians and “Danube Germanics” of the 5th-6th centuries.
