The chariot race (ἱπποδρομία), running race (στάδιον), wrestling (πάλη), boxing (πυγμαχία), pankration (παγκράτιον) and pentathlon (πένταθλον) had an important role in the programme aimed at expressing ambitions, unity and confidence.
