Summary/Abstract: There is no doubt that Germany is multicultural nowadays. Indeed, a large number of people tend to leave their home countries due to different reasons. Social disadvantages, circumstances that push people to leave, or simply the hope to get better life conditions in a rich, foreign country, move people to migrate. Communication with all kinds of people has become an daily experience, as well as the diversity of languages. Even if German language skills are acquired and used in everyday life, a medical conversation is often challenging due to the fact that this kind of communication requires better language skills than in daily life. The aim of this examination is to establish effective communication between resident doctors and patients whose native language is not German. Language difficulties in doctor-patient interaction, competencies, medical translations from different languages and translation errors, optimal strategies to overcome language barriers and possible further improvement options will be explored.
