Summary/Abstract: Both for Kant and for Goethe, man lives in a phenomenal world. However, the meaning of “appearance” or “phenomenon” differs, which also entails different worldviews. For Kant, appearance ultimately has a mathematical structure, whereas, for Goethe, it has a symbolic nature. The following paper explores the reasons why these two thinkers see this topic so differently despite their apparent accord concerning phenomenality.
