Summary/Abstract: The post-confrontational period in the Eastern Roman Empire is defined by the rise of a new dynasty - the Macedonian, and accordingly by reforms in the Church goverment. St. Nicholas I Mysticus comes from the noble family of the patriarch Photius, he was a state secretary in the imperial court, twice elected as patriarch and regent, and for about 2 decades he led diplomatic relations between Constantinople and Rome, Bulgaria, the Saracens, the Caucasian countries, etc. His name is directly related to Tsar Simeon I of Bulgaria. The purpose of this research is to fully reconstruct patriarch‘s life, which is neglected in our scientific research.
