Summary/Abstract: In this article, we aim to analyze the sources, the premises of the emergence and development of the theater and the documentary dramatic text, to discover the representative theatrical movements that conditioned the emergence of the documentary theater, to approach the theoretical works and the creations of the practitioners who determined and influenced the evolutionary directions and forms of the documentary drama from the end of the 20th century – the beginning of the the 21stcentury. We find the sources of the documentary theater in historical dramas. Naturalism was the forerunner of the documentary show. In its modern form, the documentary theater has as its precursors the well-known German theatrical theorists andpractitioners - Bertolt Brecht and Erwin Piscator, who focused their creation on the tensions between the social classes andgovernment structures.
