Summary/Abstract: Translations can be appreciated as enrichments of the target culture; however, they can also be devalued as dependent contributions. This tension also played an important role in the appreciation of translations from German in the context of the Czech national revival. This article examines this aspect in more detail, taking into account the German‑Czech nationality conflict as well as debates within the Czech community. It is shown that both older German and Czech contributions are based on the view that influences indicate a lower value or even inferiority. The article concludes with a plea for a more differentiated view of cultural transfer.
