Summary/Abstract: Peter Demetz, born in Prague in 1922, was a distinguished scholar whose influence extended beyond academia through his work with prominent publications and his involvement in significant literary projects. Surviving the Nazi occupation, he pursued German studies and later moved to the USA, where he became a renowned professor at Yale University. His academic focus included the contextual determinants of aesthetic works, the role of intellectuals, and the cosmopolitan perspective, with a strong connection to Prague and Bohemian literature. Demetz's contributions include numerous anthologies and translations, emphasizing the interconnectedness of Czech, German, and Jewish cultures. His works challenged nationalistic literary histories, advocating for a unified Bohemian literature. He received numerous accolades for his extensive contributions to literature and culture, including the Goethe Medal and the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
