Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the strategies for mitigating directive speech in Mandarin Chinese. In orderto induce the addressee to undertake an action, the speaker makes an effort to deprive directive speechof its negative overtones and guarantee the addressee to safe face. The 212 selected utterances frommessages published on Facebook by the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Taiwan during COVID-19since December 31, 2019 to October 21, 2020 were examined for their linguistic features. The direc-tive nature of the commands were mitigated by numerous linguistic means, appropriately selected forcontent and context, and they revealed the emotions of the speaker and shaped the emotions of theaddressee. As evidenced by qualitative and quantitative analysis, the utterances show the speaker’sgentle approach to the addressee, supported by the linguistic features of Mandarin Chinese.
