The Cundisius family – the book binding artists and book workers from Wschowa and Leszno in the 17th and 18th centuries

Summary/Abstract: The article aims to present the life and activities of bookbinders and booksellersfrom the Cundisius family, operating in the 17th and 18th centuries in Wschowa and Lesz-no. The analysis of incomplete material collected by means of archival, bibliographic andliterature research, it was possible to determine the fate of several family members. Thefigure of Johann Kuntze (1626–1700) was most fully presented, using the Latinized formof his surname. Born in Merseburg, active in Görlitz, before 1669 he settled in Wschowa.Here he published a report on the visit of Augustus II to this city. His grandson was prob-ably the bookbinder in Leszno, Johann Gott­ fried (d. 1769), known for publishing threeeditions of the hymnal for the Lutheran parish in Leszno. Other members of the Cundisiusfamily dealt solely with bookbinding. Conclusion: In view of the available data it has beenestablished that the Cundisius family dominated the 18th century bookmarket in the fieldof bookbinding in Wschowa and Leszno. At the end of the century the family’s positiondecreased due to the changes in book production and trade.
