Summary/Abstract: In this article, we intend to identify some types of ellipsis in movies, not before outlining the utility of ellipsis and briefly enumerating its functions. Before being a notion that can relate to cinema, the ellipsis is above all a term related to language and literature, which will consist of a gap or a jump in time. In cinema, these aspects are not different at all. The ellipsis is what is not. It is the act of passing from one moment to another without knowing, or at least without seeing, what is happening in between. More simply, it’s moving backward or forward in time. It can be a few minutes or several years, or even several centuries; in documentary films where the birth of the universe is sought, the ellipsis can be several millennia and in science fiction films, time can not to be divided in the same way; for example, we can be in exactly the same space or time of the action and the character can experience completely different situations. Why is ellipsis used in films? To shorten the scenario which is initially too long, to let the spectator imagine (without giving them an affirmative answer), to allow elements to be left unknown in order to return to them later (thus creating suspense), to create a mysterious story through the repeated use of the ellipsis, to infer the culture of a people, etc.
