Summary/Abstract: In its long history, art has confronted social norms. Artists often work with controversial and taboo subjects, exploring our darker sides to shock, provoke emotions and spark debate. The uncomfortable, ugly and taboo is an integral part of the human experience. It depends on the context in which it is presented. However, such topics often transcend social norms and ethics; art as individual and creative expression thus encounters a kind of boundary. These boundaries may be defined by social norms, cultural conventions, legislation, etc. Although the arts are not strictly regulated like other professions, they are still subject to professional ethics. The work of Peter Joel Witkin, Marco Evaristti, Guillermo Vargas Habacuc and many others has opened, and continues to open, debates about professional ethics, which also guide the behaviour of artists.
