Summary/Abstract: Orientalisms are words of different groups of Turkic, as well as Iranian and Arab-Semitic languages. The language of the Ottoman Turks was both a source of borrowings and an intermediary for the penetration of orientalisms (primarily Arabisms and Persiisms) into the South Slavic recipient languages. The article analyzes obsolete and actively used phraseological units with components of oriental origin associated with the cuisine of the East in the territory of South Slavia today. The words were borrowed together with the realities – Oriental cuisine dishes. We limited ourselves to the thematic group “Sweet dishes” (sugar, halva, Turkish delight, pekmez, desserts made of dough – baklava, gurabiya, mafish, kadaif and rice – sutliyash). The names of oriental sweets entered the recipient languages as a result of linguistic communication that accompanied the dialogue of different cultures for several centuries. The article presents some linguoculturological and historical-etymological comments on phraseological units, as well as the interpretation of phraseological turns and components included in them. This is necessary to understand the mentality of native speakers of a particular language, to get acquainted with the cultural heritage of the people.
