Summary/Abstract: Cicero’s speech Pro Marcello was delivered in the senate in the present of Ceasar, who had usurped all the state power. The speech has been raising numerous questions which remain still unanswered. It reflects the complex relation, in a complex period, of two politicians and writers. This paper offers an interpretation of Cicero’s sincerity as a means of addressing the question of why does he return to political and public life at the senate session after years of retreat.
