Summary/Abstract: The Japanese shorthand was born by adapting the system of Lindsley and Graham, and its first application can be dated to 1883. However, the developers and users also incorporated elements from the Sino-Japanese writing system, asokototen (乎古止点)kana (仮名)kanji (漢字) and bushu (部首)Other effects are the writing direction, indication of dakuten (濁点) and hatsuon (撥音), usage of Japanese-and Sino-japanese doublets. These effects are not limited to the Meiji-era shorthands, they can also be seen in modern shorthand systems.
